Two exceptional North Devon craft workshops

A short distance down the path from the Clovelly Visitor Centre, next to the donkey stables, you’ll find two craft workshops. They are well worth a visit during your holiday at Clovelly or elsewhere in the West Country, and offer you the opportunity to take home some stylish gifts for friends and family.

Clovelly Silk

At the Silk Workshop you can browse and buy colourful scarves and beautiful hand-printed fabrics, creations of the distinguished textile designer Ann Jarvis.

Ann is the former head of the design studio at Liberty of London Prints. You may well have seen Ann and her daughter Ellie showing Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer how to print silk-velvet devoré scarves on 'Kirstie and Phil's Perfect Christmas', which was broadcast on Channel 4.

One of the highlights of the Clovelly Silk range is the toile de Jouy-style fabric designed in the 1930s by the celebrated artist Rex Whistler. It incorporates his charming sketches of the village and the Devon coastal scenery around. This stylish fabric has been skilfully re-created by Ann and is available in six beautiful colourways exclusively from the Silk Workshop. The design was chosen to decorate the pretty quilts for the beds in the Sail Loft, the newly restored Grade II listed building adjacent to the Red Lion Hotel, down by the harbour. The Red Lion is one of the most beautifully located hotels in Devon.

Clovelly Pottery

Clovelly Pottery was established in 1992 by Clive Pearson. Clive is well-known in the North Devon area for the beautiful pots he throws on the wheel next to his home here in Clovelly. Each pot is hand-stamped and dated, so if you buy one you are gaining a uniquely desirable craft object.

Clovelly Pottery also stocks a range of high-quality decorative ceramics and domestic ware by other Devon and West Country potters, including traditional slipware-decorated earthenware pots by resident potter Caroline Curtis.
