ROYAL AIR FORCE CENTENARY LECTURE
100 YEARS OF THE AIR FORCE, 1918 - 2018

Sir Peter Squire joined the Royal Air Force in 1963.

His operational flying included tours on the Hunter, Harrier and Tornado. He commanded No 1 (Fighter) Squadron, the Tri-National Tornado Training Establishment at RAF Cottesmore, Nos 38 and 1 Groups, and Strike Command and was a Squadron Commander in the Falklands war.  

His staff tours in MOD included Deputy Director Air Plans, Director Air Offensive, and Assistant Chief of Air Staff and Deputy Chief of Defence Staff for Programmes and Personnel.  He held the NATO appointments as Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations in UKAIR and Commander Allied Air Forces North West Europe.

He was appointed Chief of Air Staff in April 2000 and retired at the end of July 2003.  In retirement, he was the Chairman of Trustees for The Imperial War Museum from 2006 to 2011 and was Vice-Chairman of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission from 2005 to 2008. He stood down as Senior Warden for King’s School Bruton in June 2011, where he had been a Governor for some years.

He remains President of the American Air Museum in Great Britain at IWM Duxford and Wing President for the Devon and Somerset Air Training Corps.
